A worldwide shortage in radioactive isotopes, most recently I-131 but most profoundly Technetium 99m (Tc 99m) is currently being felt by hospitals and providers. According to the American Thyroid Association (ATA), vendors who supply I-131 have informed some hospitals that no shipments of I-131 are expected until mid December 2009. The extreme shortage of Tc 99m is expected to continue until late 2010. The shortage is due to necessary major maintenance and repair projects at the two major reactors that supply the isotopes (located in Canada and the Netherlands). The ATA is encouraging providers to verify supply of I-131 to local hospitals before scheduling patients, and to be prepared to reschedule existing treatments and/or prioritize patients by need. Further details will be provided as they become available. |
